RYV Response to Home Affairs Committee Inquiry into Spiking
In January 2022, the Home Affairs Committee at Westminster opened an inquiry into Spiking. This was reflective of increased reports of spiking, an offence that often rises in frequency before abating again, and the Inquiry aimed to find solutions.
In this short response, Raise Your Voice sought to draw on international data and research into the frequency of the problem, and look at ways that we could address it locally and across the UK. These recommendations included; addressing barriers to reporting, ways that police and security staff can respond more effectively to reports, recommendations of training for those working in various parts of the night-time economy, the need for greater public awareness, and for spiking to be seen as part of an arsenal of tools used by sexual offenders.
