Tackling the Harassment of Women in Politics

Raise Your Voice and 50:50 NI along with Durham University and University College Dublin will present research carried out in 2021. Women are now 36.7% of elected representatives in the Northern Ireland Assembly. As evidenced in the most recent elections, women continue to face barriers such as violence and harassment that impact their experience of running for election, their likelihood of getting elected, and their capacity to to participate fully and safely in the political process. Sharing findings of research conducted in 2021 that found that across all stages of the political process women experience harassment, threat and violence aimed at inhibiting their involvement and sullying their professional credibility, the event will prompt debate, discussion and recommendations for ways that the Assembly and Executive can tackle the harassment encountered by women.
